What is Amok Runner? What is Stefan Zweig talking about?

Amok runner; It’s the term that I thought was the story of a runner special to the reader, and that I discovered it was a disease when I read it.

The Amok Runner is the story of a man who, as a doctor, is caught between his own complex feelings and the conscientious obligation to reach out to someone in need of help. A doctor working in the Dutch East Indies turns down the “help” request of a very wealthy woman who is in trouble and turns to him. Because of the haughty and calculating attitude of the woman, he was enraged and succumbed to his pride. But it is human life at stake. He soon falls into the grip of regret. Obsessed with helping the woman, the doctor falls under the influence of fever and amok, a kind of deadly madness found in Malaysian people.

So what is this amok runner?

It would be correct to say that the Amok Runner is a state of insanity observed in Malaysia and Africa. Sort of spiritual, this disease is used all over the world to describe such states of insanity.

It manifests itself in the form of instant killing that occurs in Malaya, the Philippines and parts of Africa. It corresponds to the phrase “cinnet” in Turkish and English.

The Amok Runner first goes into a depressive state, and after brooding, he suddenly attacks every living thing around him wild, without reason and indiscriminately. Entering this state, the Amok Runner never stops until someone stops him, gets killed, or kills himself.

The biggest feature of this cultural run is that it cost the lives of too many people and themselves. This problem usually consists of reasons such as not being able to meet the girl he loves, febrile illnesses, and deep poverty. It is the biggest and most dangerous side effect of malaria. This terrible syndrome usually occurs in men.

In cases such as severe provocation, humiliation and hurt of pride, it ends with the end of life as a result of using violence without calculation.

Survivors of the Amok runner attack are seen to use expressions such as ‘I don’t remember anything, I really don’t know what happened to me’. It is a state of insanity in which consciousness and consciousness are truly lost.

Amok runner is a common syndrome in our country and in the world. We can often see it on the second or third pages of newspapers. Especially in America, it manifests itself as school raids and an act of hitting anyone. It is also in the military literature as a kind of suicide commando.

Let’s come to the story of our written book, a disease that is not really book-specific and has its existence.

… cases in which man does not know whether he has a duty … that is, one does not only have a duty to the other, he also has a duty to himself, to the state, to science… Let’s help, of course, that’s what we’re here for… but such maxims are always theoretical… Where? Let’s help as much as we can?.. Here you are, a foreign person, I am a stranger to you, and I ask you to remain silent about the fact that you see me here … ok, you also remain silent, you are fulfilling this task … I ask you to talk to me, because your own I’m about to suffocate in my silence… You are ready to listen to me… OK… But that is easy… What if I asked you to grab me and throw me over the rail into the sea… then your benevolence and benevolence ends at that point. It ends somewhere… where one is faced with one’s own life, one’s own responsibilities… it has to end somewhere… this task has to end somewhere… or… I wonder if the duty of doctors can’t end? – Stefan Zweig

In these lines that I have quoted from the book, he has somehow revealed the limits of benevolence and benevolence. Well, if you were in the place of this doctor in the story, would you do this help? (Doctor hero is asked to have an abortion.)

The Amok Runner is the short but poignant story of a troubled doctor who lost his mind in the tropics. The story is told by a passenger who meets the mysterious doctor on the deck of a ship returning to Europe from Calcutta.

This book, signed by Stefan Zweig, always amazes me with his mastery in shaping the fiction and story. Even though this is a text taken from a true story, Stefan is a writer who adds very good description and shaping to the text. He is one of the rare writers who can deal with the weakest and most vulnerable aspects of the human being and who knows how to go down to the deepest layers of the human soul, and who can write all these in an extremely vivid, detailed and versatile narrative. Stefan Zweig, who generally used the theme of suicide in the texts he wrote, and who forced his wife Friederike to commit suicide with him during his first marriage, then gave up on this idea, years later, during the Second World War, he committed suicide with his second wife and ended his life, with the texts he wrote. reveals that there are many intersecting details in his own life…
